AUSTIN, TX (KVEO NEWS CENTER 23) — The Department of Public Safety has released the results of their Roadcheck 2013 campaign.

The department's Roadcheck 2013 campaign ran from June 4 through June 6 and aims at inspecting commercial vehicles on safety issues.

Within that time period, DPS inspected 9,200 18 wheelers, buses and other commercial vehicles compared to the 8,062 inspected in 2012.

Of the 9,200 vehicles, 21% or 1,963 were placed out of service for a variety of safety violations until those repairs can be made.

The most common safety issue of the vehicles taken off the roadways was due to brakes and defective lighting.

Drivers were also checked for compliance of federal and state laws with 248 vehicle operators being sidelined due to improper logging of duty time, driving over the maximum number of hours and failing to have the proper type of driver license.

Troopers issued 2,800 citations and more than 26,000 warnings during this years campaign.
