Las Cruces PD: Man allegedly dropped, shook, & struck 5-month-old girl
Las Cruces Police arrest a Dona Ana man after his 5-month-old daughter is rushed to the hospital with serious head injuries.
Police officials say that 24-year-old Jerry M. Marquez, of the 5500 block of north Ledesma Drive in Dona Ana, has been charged with four counts of intentional child abuse resulting in great bodily harm.
According to Las Cruces Police, officers were dispatched to the1600 block of Capitan Avenue shortly before 11 a.m. Friday, August 23rd. Police say that's where a 5-month-old girl was said to be choking or having difficulty breathing.
The child was quickly transported to Memorial Medical Center, then University Medical Center of El Paso for more advanced care.
LCPD officials say that "Detectives learned that Marquez, on multiple occasions, dropped his daughter or otherwise struck the child’s head against furniture. Marquez is also suspected of shaking the girl out of frustration."
Police add that their Detectives learned late Tuesday evening that Marquez allegedly called his girlfriend, the child’s mother, and indicated that he was going to commit suicide.
Officers located Marquez at the Capitan Avenue residence and transported to a local hospital.
Marquez was subsequently arrested Wednesday morning and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $150,000.
Officials say the baby girl is recovering from her injuries and is in stable condition at El Paso Children’s Hospital.
