Doña Ana County Clerk Lynn Ellins has donated $1,307.98 to the New Mexico Unites for Marriage Coalition after paying off legal bills associated with defending a lawsuit brought about by Republican lawmakers in the state of New Mexico challenging his stance on same-sex marriage licenses.

Ellins became the first County Clerk in the state of New Mexico to offer same-sex licenses to couples in August of 2013. Ellins was challenged by a group of New Mexico lawmakers in the Third Judicial District Court, which was ultimately dismissed by the New Mexico Supreme Court in a December 19th, 2013 ruling that upheld the county's right to issue same-sex licenses.

Ellins had been working with ProgressNow of New Mexico to garner donations to defend his stance on same-sex marriage licenses. Ellins raised $33,066.68 through ProgressNow of NM and paid $31,758.70 for legal fees in the lawsuit. The remaining $1,307.98 balance has been donated to the New Mexico Unites for Marriage Coalition.

“We did the right thing at the right time by issuing the licenses last August, and we’re doing the right thing now by donating the balance of our legal-defense fund to the coalition that stood beside us while we waited for the Supreme Court to make its determination,” Ellins said. “I want to thank all who donated, thereby helping me keep my pledge to the taxpayers of Doña Ana County that I would not use their tax dollars to wage this important fight for equality.”
