UPDATE:  Suspect in SWAT situation was taken into custody at approximately 12:45 p.m. Monday afternoon. He was taken into a marked police unit at the scene.

EARLIER:

EPISD is performing a precautionary evacuation of Dowell Elementary School, located at 5249 Bastille Ave. in Northeast El Paso due to police activity in the nearby area. A spokesperson with EPISD says 315 students are being bused to Irvin HS,

EPISD will take the Dowell Elementary to Irvin HS gym. EPISD is under the family reunification protocol, meaning that every parent needs to show proof of ID in order to pick up their student from Irvin HS. Students can be picked up from now until 3:15 p.m. Lunch is being served and all students are safe at the Irvin HS campus.

EPISD asks any parents to call 230-2550 if they have any questions.

According to emergency dispatch traffic, a SWAT situation is developing at the intersection of Rushing and Orleans Street, near the elementary school. At this time, police are setting up a perimiter to Juliandra and Rushing.

The situation is fluid and in order to protect the safety of all involved, we will update after the sitation resolves itself.
