Debate on city parks expansion
Tuesday, January 22, 2013 - 6:54pm

El Paso City Council Monday debated the expansion of city parks that is promised under the comprehensive Plan El Paso  project.

City representatives spoke, each tending to favor more parks in his or her own district. Carl Robinson said his district in Northeast El Paso has fewer parks than other districts. He was challenged by Michael Noe, who asserted that Fort Bliss is in the northeast and contains several parks and playgrounds for use by military familes, whether they live on or off post.

Jim Tolbert, who is Vice Chairman of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, says the city needs more soccer fields in order to meet the demand for those facilities. But he acknowledges that is a matter of finding space in some cases. He added the city needs more neighborhood parks as well.

The council asked for and expects to receive a more thorough presentation in four weeks.
