Death from flu reported in New Mexico
Santa Fe, NM (KTSM) — This year's flu season is proving more deadly by the day, as an elderly New Mexico woman has succumbed to the virus.
The New Mexico Dept. of Health reports the woman lived in Santa Fe county.
Leaders there say the predominant strain in the state is H1N1, or the swine flu.
"Please remember that the best way to protect yourself and the elderly from the flu is to get vaccinated," said Department of Health Cabinet Secretary Retta Ward, MPH. "As flu activity increases in New Mexico, it's important for anyone who has not yet been vaccinated against the flu to contact their healthcare provider or pharmacist about getting a flu shot."
Seven percent of patient visits at 29 New Mexico providers this month were flu-related, compared to four percent nationwide.
