Prosecutors Say Christian Martinez Suffers from Mental Retardation
El Paso — At 9 AM on Tuesday the court will reconvene in the competency trial of the man accused of stabbing two women to death. Christian Albert Martinez allegedly stabbed 20 –year-old Jovana Flores and 58-year-old Amalia Flores to death back in January of last year.
A jury is deciding whether he's competent to stand trial. Martinez pleaded not guilty to the charges in August. Yesterday, jurors heard from court appointed experts on Martinez’s mental state. His lawyers say he suffers from mental retardation.
If he is found incompetent, Judge Gonzalo Garcia says Martinez will be placed in a maximum security unit within a mental health facility.
