Thursday, April 4, 2013 - 4:31pm

The Dona Ana County District Attorney's office is working on tackling truancy in the county.

During his monthly town hall meeting, District Attorney Mark D'Antonio said they were working with area school districts to go after parents who purposely do not send their kids to school.

D'antonio said they planned on taking a proactive approach to the problem, and that parents in the county would be receiving letters explaining the DA's position and stressing the importance of education.

"Facts show us and statistics show us that if the kids dont go to school they'll easily wind up in gangs then there is violence on the streets and those kids will wind up in jail last place out children need to be is in jail," he said.

The District Attorney's office was also having a 4-hour training session Friday on gangs. Area law enforcement agencies will learn from a gang specialist on preventing gangs from forming and the best methods of dismantling them.

The next town hall meeting was scheduled for May 9.
