Customs and Border Protection officers seize nearly two pounds of methamphetamine at El Paso port
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and U.S. Border Patrol agents working at the El Paso port of entry seized 1.9 pounds of methamphetamine Thursday. One man was arrested in the case.
The seizure was made just after 7 p.m. Thursday while CBP officers and Border Patrol agents were performing an enforcement sweep of vehicles waiting in line at the Bridge of the Americas. A CBP drug sniffing dog alerted to a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe that was entering the U.S. from Mexico. CBP officers scanned the vehicle with the Z-Portal non-intrusive inspection system and spotted anomalies in the rocker panel area of the SUV. CBP officers continued their exam and located five
methamphetamine-filled bundles in the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested by CBP officers. He was identified as 27-year-old Burt Allen Smith of Wichita, Kansas. He was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
