Galveston - Some passengers were tossed about and hurt during a sharp turn by the Carnival Cruise Lines ship Ecstasy near Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

Ecstasy was scheduled to return to Galveston on Thursday.

A statement provided to The Associated Press from Miami-based Carnival says the maneuver Wednesday afternoon was meant to avoid a buoy.

The statement says a large buoy was adrift, mostly submerged, and could not be detected by radar.

Carnival says injured guests were treated in the ship's infirmary.

The company declined to say how many people were hurt.

The Coast Guard has been notified.

KHOU-TV reports the ship, which departed last Saturday, rocked to one side and tilted for several minutes.

Passenger Patrice Edwards says she and her husband were in bed when both ended up on the floor as "the whole boat just shifted."
