Young mother busted smuggling marijuana
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — El Paso Customs and Border Protections Agents working at the El Paso ports of of entry made seven separate marijuana seizures over the weekend. Overall, CBP netted 508 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $406,400.
“CBP officers are hard at work supporting our primary homeland security mission,” said Hector Mancha, CBP El Paso Port Director. “The inspections we conduct often identify other violations and this drug seizure activity is a good example of the vigilance demonstrated by CBP.”
Field agents were able to recover 87 pounds of marijuana in a single bust at the Paso Del Norte international crossing Friday afternoon just before 4 p.m. CBP and Border Patrol agents were performing an enforcement operation in the line of vehicles waiting to enter the U.S. from Mexico when they encountered a 2001 Dodge Stratus driven by a 21-year-old woman with her two young children.
CBP Officers were able to locate hidden bundles of marijuana in multiple locations inside of the Dodge, including the doors, seats, tires, and bumper of the car. The 87 bundles weighed 94.7 pounds.
The driver, 21-year-old Haydee Maynez of El Paso was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents to face charges associated with the smuggling attempt; her two young children were released to a relative.
