Two men sentenced in connection with May 2011 OP nightclub beating

El Paso, TX (KTSM) — Two men pleaded guilty in connection with the May 7, 2011 beating of Lionel Martinez outside of the now shuttered Old Plantation "OP" gay nightclub in downtown El Paso on Wednesday.
Four men were accused of beating Martinez so severely that he spent months in an intensive care unit at University Medical Center. Martinez' family has maintained that his beating was a 'hate crime' because they said the suspects were calling Martinez gay slurs, despite the fact that he is not gay.
Roman Olvera, 22, was sentenced to three years in prison for his connection with the beating on Wednesday.
A second man, Manny Portillo, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison to run concurrently with an unrelated five year sentence for a felony harassment on a public servant conviction.
A third man, Ivan Gallardo, who was 17-years-old when the beating occurred faced trial in 2013 and is set to be sentenced on March 26, 2014.
The fourth man who was accused of being involved in the beating, Ruben Arturo Valenzuela, pleaded guilty in April of 2012 was was sentenced to 12 years in jail.
