Dona Ana County, NM (KTSM) — A Las Cruces toddler is in critical condition after authorities believe she was abused at the hands of her mother's girlfriend Tuesday.
Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office was called by an area hospital after a 3-year-old girl was examined for head trauma and multiple bruises Tuesday night. The hospital, suspecting that the injuries were a result of child abuse or neglect, immediately alerted authorities.
Sheriff's investigators responded to the hospital where the learned that the toddler's mother had left her in the care of her girlfriend, Yvette Piñon-Carbajal, Tuesday morning while the mother went to work.
When the girl's mother came home, Piñon-Carbajal told her that the little girl slipped in the bathtub earlier in the day and had been sleeping most of the day. The little girl then had a seizure in front of the mother, so the two brought her to the Las Cruces area hospital.
After arrival, the child was taken to University Medical Center in El Paso in a medically-induced coma. The girl is reportedly in critical condition.
DACSO investigators believe that Piñon-Carbajal's account of what happened to the toddler is inconsistent with the child's injuries.
Piñon-Carbajal was arrested early Wednesday morning, charged with one count of child abuse and one count of child abuse resulting in great bodily harm. She’s being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash-only bond.
