For the second time in under a week, Las Cruces Police arrested a pair of men after responding to an unrelated call.

LCPD were investigating an unrelated incident around 2 a.m. Monday, August 4 in the 1200 block of Dale Ln. when they say a silver Chrysler sedan left the area at a high rate of speed as they approached a residence.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the car, but the driver, later identified as Jesse D. Lara, 28, refused to stop and reportedly led police on a brief chase from California Avenue north along Solano Drive.

The pursuit eventually ended when Lara failed to negotiate a turn on north Main St. and hit a curb. Lara then led officers on a brief foot chase before he was taken into custody. Lara's passenger, 34-year-old Ricardo Ruiz Leyva remained in the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.

Police allegedly located a black semi-automatic handgun inside of the car along with drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine.

Lara and Leyva were both charged with one count each of possession of a firearm by a felon. Lara was also charged with resisting, evading or obstructing an officer; possession of methamphetamine; tampering with evidence; and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Lara was both booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $5,000. Leyva is being held without bond for violating terms of federal probation.
