El Paso, TX (KTSM) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agents working at the El Paso port of entry seized 35.5 pounds of heroin valued at $1,136,000 on Saturday at the Ysleta crossing.
The large seizure was made shortly before 4:00 p.m. on Saturday when a drug sniffing dog named "Wizard" alerted its human agent counterparts of the 2000 GMC Jimmy truck entering the United States from Mexico. CBP officers flagged the truck for secondary inspection, which indicated further indicated abnormalities in the fuel tank area. CBP Officers later located a compartment above the fuel tank which contained over twenty-six wrapped bundles which tested positive for heroin.
“This is an enormous seizure,” said Hector Mancha, CBP El Paso Port Director. “CBP in El Paso, West Texas and New Mexico seized 60 pounds in all 2012 and seven pounds in 2011 so taking 35 pounds in a single incident is huge.”
CBP arrested the driver of the GMC, 21-year-old Jesus Antonio Gonzalez of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. He was turned over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents to face charges in association with the alleged failed smuggling attempt.
