Las Cruces Police arrested 28-year-old Laura E. Maestas after they allege she was writing fake checks at an area convenience store.

LCPD allege that Maestas paid for items at the Pic Quick store located at 2001 Bataan Memorial West on January 8, 2014 with checks that turned out to be fake, and appeared to be homemade. The three checks were written to Pic Quick in the amounts of $74.04, $61.07 and $41.07.

Management at the Pic Quick store later learned from Citizens Bank that the checks were not valid and contacted authorities.

LCPD Detectives were able to identify the woman police believe is Maestas through the driver's license used when she purchased the items, as well as through surveillance from the Pic Quick store.

Detectives are investigating other cases of fraudulent checks and may have additional arrests, and additional charges, in the near future.
