Police have charged a 29-year-old Las Cruces woman suspected of falsifying and cashing multiple checks belonging to a longtime family friend.

Yvonne Y. Loya, 29, of 6645 Moongate Rd., is charged with 50 counts of forgery. Each count is a fourth-degree felony count.

Las Cruces Police detectives learned that sometime around Feb. 2, 2008, Loya began forging checks belonging to an 87-year-old family friend whose daughter helped raise Loya. Detectives determined that between February 2008 and April 2013, Loya cashed 50 checks belonging to the woman.

The 50 checks cashed over the five-plus year period totaled more than $20,000.

The 87-year-old victim used to live in Mesquite, N.M., but moved out of state in 2005. The last time the victim had contact with Loya was four years ago and she was unaware that Loya was writing checks on her Wells Fargo bank account.

A relative of the victim became suspicious after learning that Loya had possession of checks belonging to the 87-year-old woman.

Loya was arrested Friday, Oct. 25, and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $30,000.
