A 56-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years behind bars after admitting to sexually assaulting a 7-year-old family member in a Las Cruces court Thursday.

Ruben Lira, 57, admitted in District Court Judge Darren Kugler's courtroom to sexually assaulting the young child while she was in his care.

The child's brother reported the assault to the child's mother stating that Lira had "done a nasty thing" to his sister, which led to the investigation and arrest of Lira.

The young girl told investigators that she asked Lira if he was going to keep violating her and he told her that he would, as long as she kept sleeping over at his home. Lira also told the young girl not to report the incident to any other family members.

Lira will serve 30 years in prison for his conviction of two counts of Criminal Sexual Contact of a Minor under the age of 13.
