Las Cruces man charged in Monday morning mobile home arson
Las Cruces, NM (KTSM) — Las Cruces Police say that a fire that destroyed a Las Cruces mobile home early morning was Arson.
LCPD have arrested Anthony Garret Madison, 43, and charged him with one count of negligent arson, a fourth degree felony.
Las Cruces firefighters arrived on the scene of a fully engulfed mobile home at 1338 Lynx Trail shortly after 1:00 a.m. Monday morning. The firefighters were able to extinguish the flames, but the home was a total loss.
LC Fire and police investigators say it appears that some sort of substance was poured over books in the fireplace in order to set the home on fire.
Madison initially told investigators that he put logs in the fireplace and set them on fire before he fell asleep on the couch. He says he woke up at 1:00 a.m. but didn't notice any heat or flames in the living room before he went outside to smoke.
Madison says he turned around to go back inside to get a lighter and there was already heavy smoke throughout the home.
Fire Investigators determined that Madison's statement about what lead up to the fire were inconsistent, and he would have been dead if he had been asleep on the couch as he initially claimed.
Two other people who lived in the home also told investigators that Madison had recently threatened to burn the home down.
Madison was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a charge of negligent arson. He is being held on a $15,000 bond.
