A man and woman suspected of an early morning auto burglary were arrested within minutes by Las Cruces Police.

Marissa Dianne Garcia, 19, and John Lara, 29, were charged with one count each of auto burglary and conspiracy. Lara also faces one count of possession of heroin.

Shortly before 1 a.m. Friday, May 9, Las Cruces Police were called to the report of an auto burglary in progress at the Walgreen’s store on El Paseo Road.

Officers learned that a 37-year-old woman had left her vehicle unlocked in the parking lot and was inside Walgreens for only a few minutes. When the woman exited the store she noticed her car door was ajar and two people, later identified as Garcia and Lara, near the vehicle.

The automobile owner attempted to question Garcia and Lara but the couple fled, walking north from the Walgreens store. The woman called 911, and responding officers located Garcia and Lara just north of the old Kmart store.

Garcia and Lara were booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where they are both being held without bond.

Garcia was arrested April 3 on a charge of receiving or disposing stolen property. In that case, Garcia and another woman are suspected of selling stolen property via Facebook. Garcia was arrested after she sold a stolen Jimmy Choo purse for only $60. The purse had been valued at approximately $950.
