A teen is behind bars after allegedly stealing a truck in east El Paso, driving it to a south El Paso park where he lost control of the vehicle, striking a light pole and crashing into several parked cars.

The incident happened around 7:57 p.m. Thursday evening at Modesto Gomez Park, located at 4700 Edna in south El Paso.

Investigators learned that a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche was stolen from an apartment complex in the 1600 block of Lee Trevino Wednesday. The truck owner's daughter had made a public plea on social media for information about her father's missing truck just hours before the incident at Modesto Gomez Park.

Witnesses reported that the teen driver was heading west in the 4700 block of Edna when the teen driver lost control of the truck, struck a light pole that then fell onto a Ford Focus. The Avalanche then continued speeding out of control into the parking lot where six other cars were hit before the truck finally came to a stop.

The teen driver attempted to flee the scene, but was detained by bystanders at the park who were playing kickball. Three other teens were inside the truck at the time of the crash, but were not charged in connection to this incident.

The teen has since been charged with unauthorized use of motor vehicle. It is unknown if the teen is directly responsible for the theft of the truck. No one was seriously injured in the crash.
