UPDATE: Man arrested in connection with murder near Cincinnati District

UPDATE (March 22): El Paso Police have arrested and charged 36-year-old Luis Castruita of the 600 block of Prospect in connection with the murder of 22-year-old Efren Gonzalez early Saturday morning.

Investigators arrested and booked Castruita into the El Paso County Jail early Monday morning on Murder charges. His bond is currently set at $1,000,000.

Police are declining to release a mugshot of Castruita at this time, stating that releasing his photograph could hinder their ongoing investigation.


UPDATE:  Friends have identified the man shot and killed in West El Paso early Saturday morning as 22-year-old Efren Gonzalez.  According to his Facebook page, Gonzalez was a graduate of Eastwood High School and attended El Paso Community College.

Gonzalez's friends also commented on the NewsChannel 9 Facebook page.

"He was my husband's friend," wrote M.J. Torres. "Condolences go out to the family and I ask for the El Paso community to help with the investigation."

 


 

ORIGINAL STORY:  Investigators with the El Paso Police department are investigating the murder of a 22-year-old man near the Cincinnati Entertainment District early Saturday morning.

The EPPD investigation revealed that the male victim was crossing the 2500 block of N. Mesa at Robinson on foot when he got into a verbal altercation with another person. The suspect, who was inside of a vehicle at the time, brought out a gun and fired it at the victim.

The victim was struck in the chest by the bullet. He was transported to University Medical Center where he later died.

The suspect in the case fled the scene. EPPD's Crimes Against Persons department is asking anyone with information as to the identity of the suspect and the description of the vehicle they were in to please call El Paso Police at (915) 832-4400 or to remain anonymous, you can call the Crime Stoppers of El Paso at (915) 566-8477.

This is the 3rd murder of 2014 compared with three at the same time last year.
