Man arrested after brief foot pursuit by off-duty EPCSO deputies
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — A man is behind bars this morning after allegedly vandalizing El Paso City Hall with graffiti overnight. Two El Paso County Sheriff's Deputies who were off-duty, working an assignment at Leo's Nightclub were flagged down in reference to someone spray-painting El Paso City Hall around 12:40 pm. Thursday morning.
The Deputies located a suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Rodney Echeverria, and chased him on foot to a ravine located near the Campbell and Franklin.
Echeverria had spray painted "Daniel Saenz Murded" and "YouTube Murder ER" on the City Hall sight, apparently in retaliation to the release of surveillance footage of the death of body builder Daniel Saenz while in police custody last March.
Echeverria was reportedly uncooperative with the Deputies and kept stating that he was making a statement since EPPD shot and killed Daniel Saenz. Echeverria requested to be taken to the hospital, but continued to be uncooperative with El Paso Fire Department.
He was transported to UMC by ambulance and upon release was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility. He has been charged with graffiti under $1,500, evading arrest and resisting arrest. His bonds totaled $7,000.
EPCSO advises that additional charges may be pending from El Paso Police Department from a separate graffiti incident in east El Paso overnight.
