EARLIER ( Jan. 24, 2014): Doña Ana County Sheriff’s investigators are looking for a 20-year-old Chaparral man who allegedly admitted to stealing scrap metal in the Chaparral area.

On December 20, 2013, a Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Deputy on patrol in the 400 block of Chaparral noticed a group of men standing near a pickup truck loaded with scrap metal. After speaking with the men, the Deputy determined that the metal and various auto parts didn't belong to any of the men.

Lorenzo Cano, 20, of Chaparral reportedly admitted to the Deputy that he climbed a six-foot tall chain link fence and stole the metal. Cano told Deputies that he intended to take the scrap metal to a recycling plant to exchange it for cash.

Sheriff's Deputies in Chaparral have seen a spike in the number of scrap metal thefts in the Chaparral area in recent months. Deputies are unsure if Cano is connected to any of those thefts at this time.

A warrant has been issued for Cano's arrest, charging him with residential burglary. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, (575) 525-1911. Anonymous tips can also be made by calling Crime Stoppers, (800) 222-TIPS or via text message to CRIMES (274637) using the keyword LCTIPS.
