Dona Ana County Sheriff's investigators have identified a 19-year-old man who is suspected of stabbing and killing 21-year-old Gilberto Wences, who was walking home from work April 19, 2014.

A warrant was obtained for the arrest of Mario Soto, 19, who was riding in a pickup truck with a group of men the night of April 19 when they saw Wences walking in an alley near the 1200 block of Church Street in Anthony, NM.

Wences, who was walking home from his job at McDonald's in Anthony, TX had reportedly clocked out at 10:58 p.m. and was walking through the alley on his way home. Witnesses who were allegedly with Soto that evening told investigators that Wences had previously threatened to fight one of the other men in the truck.

The driver of the truck allegedly drove up to Wences as he walked through the alley and asked if he was the one who wanted to fight him. The witnesses in the truck said that Wences said 'no' and began to run from the truck.

The driver then parked the truck and all of the men inside the truck got out and chased Wences. That's when the witnesses say that Soto jumped on top of Wences and began to fight with him.

Witnesses who were nearby at a party told investigators they could hear screams coming from the alleyway around 11:30 p.m. Sheriff's Deputies were called a short while later, just before midnight.  When deputies arrived, they found Wences in the alley with several stab wounds to his chest and upper left thigh. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A warrant was issued for Soto's arrest Tuesday, charging him with first degree murder and ordering him to be held without bond. Anyone with information on Soto's whereabouts is asked to call the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office, (575) 386-4302 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
