Las Cruces Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to the identity of the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a man Friday evening.

David Nevarez, 53, of Tortugas, N.M., was struck by a vehicle sometime Friday night as he crossed Picacho Avenue west of Las Cruces. Nevarez died from his injuries.

The crash occurred on Picacho Avenue near its intersection with Shalem Colony Trail and Bamert Road. The vehicle that struck Nevarez is believed to have been traveling eastbound on Picacho toward Las Cruces.

The driver of the vehicle that struck Nevarez did not stop to render aid or call authorities. Dona Ana County Sheriff’s investigators located an emblem from a Chevrolet near the scene of the crash but have not determined if it belongs to the vehicle that struck Nevarez.

The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police are investigating the crash.

If you know the identity of the driver of the vehicle that struck Nevarez, or have any information that may help investigators, you are asked to call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or send a tip via text message to LCTIPS (528477).

The Crime Stoppers number and text messaging services are operational 24 hours a day and you do not have to give your name to collect a reward.
