A blaze broke out in an abandoned building on Rosa Avenue at around 1:30 Tuesday afternoon.

Flames are shot out of the windows of the two-story building, prompting a big emergency response.  Firefighters called it a "Condition 4," the highest level of danger for fires.

Eighteen units and 47 firefighters responded using heavy supplies of water. They contained the fire within 15 minutes, and fortunately, nobody was inside.

The city said the building's owner had paid permits to repair it but that he never did the work, and the permits expired. The fire department said it was a challenge trying to keep the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.

"The difficulty with this type of building construction was having to pull down ceilings to ensure that it didn't extend to other parts of the building, said Vincent Frausto, Batallion Chief.

The fire caused an estimated $50 thousand dollars in damages. Fire investigators will now do their homework to determine how the fire started.
