Fire crews made significant progress Thursday putting out a wildfire in Otero County, New Mexico. As of this evening, the Curtis Fire is 45 percent contained.

The wildfire started yesterday just north of Highway 130 near the Curtis Canyon Dam in Mayhill. The size of the fire is estimated at 109 acres. That's down from 200 acres yesterday.

Highways 130 and 82 were closed last night because of the blaze and more than a dozen homes were evacuated. Those closures and evacuations have since been lifted. Eighty-six firefighters are still on the scene. The fire is believed to be human caused.
