The City of Sunland Park is seeking a new council member.

District 1 city rep. Christian Lira is stepping down to run for State Rep. District 34 against Bealquin Gomez and Mary Helen Garcia in the democratic primary in June.

He won the council seat even though he withdrew his name from the race, but not in time to be taken off the ballot.

Council members will appoint someone to fill the vacancy.

Those interested must be at least 18 years old, be a registered voter, live in Sunland Park's District 1, which stretches from southeast of Memorial Pines Cemetery, down to Santo Domingo St. and east to McNutt.

Applicants must also have no felony convictions.

To apply, submit a letter of interest and resume to City manager Vernon Wilson, vernon.wilson@sunlandpark-nm.gov.
