Correctional Officer Receives Medal of Valor
Las Cruces, NM — There are only a handful of people who can proudly wear a law enforcement badge, and fewer still who are honored to wear a medal of valor.
One New Mexico Department of Corrections Officer just received this prestigious award on Monday morning for saving the of a 2-year-old boy.
Sergeant Mitchell Lamb received the medal for saving Asher Lamb's (no relation) life on December 21, 2012, officials say. They add, the young boy was accidentally hit by a family vehicle and sustained serious head and femur injuries.
Sergeant Lamb is the little boy's neighbor and came to his aid. Officials say he helped calm the little boy down and stabilized him until paramedics could arrive on the scene.
Asher's parents tell us he's getting better everyday even though he's still in a cast.
"He took charge and helped us to know the to call the ambulance to come to us. I'm so grateful for him," Ashton Haight,Asher's mother said.
The New Mexico Department of Corrections says only a few people have received the Medal of Valor and is the second highest honor awarded to officers.
