El Paso — Copper thefts are on the rise. Police say there have been a vast amount of copper thefts in El Paso over the past two weeks. The most recent attempt took place just about an hour and a half ago at the Rio Plaza off of Artcraft.
Police say the thief cut wires that were housed in back of the strip mall in an attempt to steal copper. The alarm was tripped and investigators believe it may have spooked the thief.
These wires are very dangerous because they help supply electricity to the businesses in this location, but thieves are willing to risk injury and/or death because copper will net them hundreds, even thousands of dollars.
The El Paso Electric crew we spoke with says the suspect was unable to steal any copper but they did cause a lot of damage.
