Consul General of Mexico Awards UTEP Scholarship Funding
EL PASO — The UTEP scholarship fund went up $17,500 thanks to a check from from Jacob Prado Gonzalez, the Consul General of Mexico in El Paso.
The University of Texas at El Paso President Diana Natalicio accepted the gift during a ceremony at the Mexican Consulate as part of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME) Becas Scholarship Program.
The funds, which UTEP will match to total $35,000, will provide scholarship opportunities for Mexican students attending the University.
“We at UTEP greatly appreciate the scholarship support that we’ve received from IME,” UTEP President Diana Natalicio said during the check ceremony. “It is partnerships like this one where we can match and leverage the resources that enable us to support more of the outstanding students on our campus.”
For the third year, IME has funded the scholarship gift to UTEP to provide and improve access to academic opportunities for Mexican students who want to attend adult education programs and universities in the United States. Recipients use the funds to develop skills in high-demand fields that will enhance their job opportunities in this country.
The students selected to receive the 2012-13 scholarships are: Jorge Banos Gomar, junior accounting major; Jose F. Gutierrez De La Rocha, junior business major; Abril Lechuga-Avalos, senior organizational and corporate communications major; Luis A. Melendez Rodriguez, freshman international business major; and Enrique Quintana, senior accounting major.
The IME-Becas (Spanish for scholarship) program was established in 2005 through a bilateral agreement between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico through IME and the University of California-Berkeley. To date, the program has given UTEP a total of $55,000 in scholarship funds.
