CHAPARRAL, N.M. (KTSM) — There are many trash dumping sites in Chaparral, you can find tires, old furniture, wood and even unused cars.
"we are so tired of seeing trash everywhere people come her to dump their trash and they leave" Chaparral resident Rosa Hinojosa said.
Residents are specifically concerned about a lot that has more than 10 thousand tires and trash, vecctor control says this property is prime breeding ground for mosquitoes and west nile virus.
"mosquitoes can breed in as little as a bottle cap, when you're talking about tires you're talking about the ability for enormous hatches of mosquitoes, so the property that has been identified in Chaparral is one of several properties in Doña Ana County that are problematic in that regard" Jess C. Williams said.
Dona Ana County's spokeperson says discussions with the owner about a clean up have already started.
"what we try to do with property owners is to first educate and tell them what the problem is and tell them if they're not in compliance with codes and how to get in compliance and then we have an enforcement strategy after that" said Williams.
According to a woman who lives one block away of the dumpsite, people need to be aware of the fact that people who live in this area could easily be affected.
"if we get bitten by mosquitoes we will die with no remedy because there's a lot of trash, we might not have many right now because we didn't have much rain until today but it's going to start to come out" Hinojosa concluded.
