Students at Saint Clement's Parish School will soon have to new playground thanks to volunteers in the community who are scrambling to finish construction by Sunday's deadline.
All weekend community members are donating their time to help give students a safe place to play.
Ramon Sanchez with Saint Clement’s Parish School says the school's old playground needed to be replaced after it became un-safe.
"It was a playground that was already a little dangerous. We had several instances where kids were getting hurt. The wood was decaying,” said Sanchez.
Sanchez says the new playground isn't just a place for students to play. It's also a place to learn.
"They can actually learn to share. Learn teamwork skills. Learn to be patient. Learn the values that are fundamental for them to become effective learners in the academic environment,” said Sanchez.
Volunteer Nicholas Jaquez says he is honored to help the school.
"We're willing to give back to the community versus just take from it. Aside from getting our degrees and certifications and what-not, this is an opportunity to work in the real public and see what's it’s like to work with and interact with people on real time basis,” said Jaquez.
Jaquez says other volunteers are more than willing to help.
"Most of them seem, like they get pleasure out of it. Actually having fun. They are doing it and it's not like I have to, I'm entitled to it. It's more like I want to,” said Jaquez.
Sanchez is overwhelmed by the community's support.
"We are touched. We are impressed by the dedication. We are impressed by the commitment that complete strangers to our school community have demonstrated,” said Sanchez.
After months of planning, Sanchez says he is proud to see the construction almost finished.
"We are looking at magic. We are looking at dreams that are becoming reality. This is a small representation of what our community can do,” said Sanchez.
The new playground at Saint Clement's Parish School is expected to be finished Sunday evening.
