Last weekend it was graduation time for many local colleges, but classes continue for high schools. Educators know what happens in student's early years in high school, can determine their future success. "Communities In Schools" is a program that has been around since the 1970's that is designed to reduce the high school dropout rate. The program places a representative inside schools, where he or she can identify students who may be struggling and help to pair them with mentors. Janice Briones is the Program Coordinator for Communities in Schools at El Dorado Ninth Grade Academy.
Most of the kids she works with are considered "at risk," but she feels it's her responsibility to ensure all students see their potential. She says even high-achieving students sometimes need to be reminded of what it takes to be successful. "Right now they're freshman; we are trying to give them that kind of awareness, to go ahead and go to college and prepare them."
