EL PASO COUNTY - The blistering heat and record drought may result in 4th of July without fireworks.
County Judge Veronica Escobar is asking Governor Rick Perry to declare El Paso County a drought disaster area.As of late this morning, Escobar said she hadn't heard back from Perry's office. But she says, 20 other counties also filed the same disaster request and the Governor was still going through the applications.
If Perry declares El Paso a disaster area, county leaders could vote to ban all fireworks until July 6th.
Last week, the county banned fireworks that shoot into the air but this new ban would apply to ordinary firecrackers and even sparklers.
Tonight commissioners will hold a special meaning to at 2:00 p.m. to decided whether the ban will take effect.
We'll be there and let you know what happens.
