CANUTILLO - A round of severe storms rocked the Borderland Thursday evening. Heavy rain, dazzling lightning, and large hail and strong winds accompanied the strong thunderstorms. Golf ball sized hail fell from one storm around Truth or Consequences. National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Rogash told NewsChannel 9 that it was the most significant severe weather outbreak so far this year. Fortunately, the storms were moving fast enough to avoid significant flash flooding, but two locations around the greater El Paso area reported wind gusts of 67mph.

The strong winds were enough to lead to some downed trees, broken limbs and damage to signs. One strong wind gust downed a tree in Canutillo snapping a power line. The power was restored Thursday night, but the tree with an estimated base of around 3 or 4 feet destroyed a fence and left behind a big mess for property owners to clean up.
