EL PASO - Fourth grade students at Park Elementary put on their hard hats to help build a new library in their classroom.

They were one of 18 EPISD campuses awarded a classroom impact grant.

Students from the winning classrooms decided what they wanted to do with the money. Miss Johnson's fourth grade class chose a new classroom library.

"We're going to be rebuilding a new library with the children in mind," said fourth grade teacher Renee Johnson. "The children will actually be drawing the library floor plan. They'll actually give the library a name. We're going to have nice cushions for them to sit on. And with this grant, we're going to be ordering books."

EPISD awarded more than $21,000 in classroom impact grants this school year. Park Elementary's new library is expected to be completed in March.

I still disagree. There are so many reading campaigns and programs out there. Look at, "Book It!" by Pizza Hut or the many shows on T.V. that rightfully promote reading. You don't ever see any such energy spent toward the importance of math and science. The education system needs to step it up and make as much fuss if not more about math and science. If you ever have a chance to see a Space Shuttle launch, think about the math and physics it took to achieve a successful launch. Simply amazing!

It's true that science and math are integral to our nation's success; however, if the kids can't read or understand the science and math materials, what's the point? If we want more kids studying math and science, they necessarily must be better readers. I disagree that the educational system only promotes reading. If it did, we'd have better all-around students. We don't. Too many kids are in high school and are lacking in all areas of education, not merely one or two of them.

Although I'm pleased to see the money going toward education but, a library? It seems to me that the only thing the education system stresses anymore is reading. Now, I'm not downplaying it but that's ALL one hears about. Why not something like a science/math lab? Math is where it's at and that is where our children are severely lacking. C'mon educators! You need to stress the importance of math and science and enlighten our childrens' minds instead of teaching that reading is all there is.
