Clamshell Packages On the Way Out

Sharp Edges on Plastic

December 23, 2008 - 10:45am

Some major companies are doing away with those fussy plastic packages, they're called clamshell packages. Companies use it to display the product but also to protect it from theft.

"I really wish that it could be simple and you could go ahead and grab it with your two hands and open it up, but usually it never happens," Shopper, Carlos Lascurain said.

Our team found out many consumers are getting injured opening the plastic packages.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports last year more than 5,000 people went to the emergency room with injuries from plastic containers involving rigid or semi rigid edges.

"You really don't think about it actually hurting people to the extent they have to go to the hospital," Shopper, Patti Montes said.

Those alarming numbers are driving companies like Sony, who decided this year, do do away with clamshell packaging by Christmas of 2009. The company spokesperson says they are going with a more environmental friendly packaging.
