EL PASO — On Tuesday El Paso City Council will likely vote to install the additional two percent hotel room tax, and include some tough language for hotels that don't comply.
Under the proposed changes to exisiting law, a hotel that is late in paying the additional taxes can be charged with a misdemeanor crime for each day the tax payment is late. The city would even have the option to close a hotel until the entire room taxes are paid.
The extra two percent hotel occupancy tax was approved Nov 6 as proposition 3 on the city ballot. The additional revenue is expected to pay for much of the downtown baseball stadium construction.
