City Council to Discuss City’s Final Redistricting Options at Special Meeting
EL PASO — A special City Council meeting next Monday will discuss the city's redistricting options, officials announced Tuesday.
Since October 2011, the Districting Commission has held numerous biweekly evening public meetings, along with seven city-wide community outreach meetings. Public participation efforts also included live streaming of all Districting Commission regular meetings, which were broadcasted on the City’s Channel 15, and also made available on the districting website. Officials said these efforts were designed to encourage public involvement and comments during the redistricting process.
At the July 23 Special Council Meeting, City Council will be considering alternative proposed redistricting plans. Following City Council approval of a final redistricting plan for the City, the adopted redistricting plan will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Justice for preclearance review in order to comply with Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. Following preclearance, the new district boundaries will be implemented for use in the May 2013 general election.
The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers, City Hall, 2 Civic Center Plaza.
