The number of people living in poverty continues to climb and according to new numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of children affected is also going up.

15 million children are living in poverty across the country. So what effect is this having on their mental health? Local child psychologst Richard Patterson says he sees more and more children and teens in his office that feel like outcasts because of their families' income level.

"They feel out of the loop," Dr. Patterson said. "Socially they get picked on because they don't have a cell phone or they can't instant message or whatever."

Dr. Patterson says one way to help is be honest with your kids. He says children can tap into tense moments in the home and start blaming themselves if they don't know what's going on.
