MT. DORA, FLA— It seems like a scene out of Gabriel Garcia-Marquez's 'Love in the Time of Cholera,” but this couple really did find each other after falling in love 70 years ago.
A Florida couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary on Monday after the two found each other again after being apart for 70 years.
Chuck McAdoo, 86, was a young teenager when he had a love-at-first-sight experience when he saw Rosella Smiley in Pennsylvania. He swore he was going to marry her one day.
Smiley and McAdoo began dating, but shortly after McAdoo joined the Navy, fought in WWII, and never heard from Smiley again.
He kept a picture of Smiley in his wallet for the next 70 years, and said he would look at it daily.
Smiley and McAdoo married other people. And 67 years later, McAdoo was a widower, living in St. Petersburg. He made a few phone calls, and set out to find Smiley. To his luck, he found her. Smiley was also a widow, living two hours away from him in Mt. Dora.
McAdoo and Smiley married last year, and Smiley, now Mrs. McAdoo, said they felt that no matter what their age was, they felt that this was their first and last love.
Chuck McAdoo said he wasn't going to risk losing her again.
