Child abuse costs Americans billions each year
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — The tragedy of child abuse is costing the United States billions of dollars each year, that according to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control.
The CDC's study says the Medicaid system pays $5.9 billion dollars a year for these children.
They compared the costs of those children Child Protective Services says were at risk for maltreatment to children in the general population, and found on average children who had a case with CPS had Medicaid costs around $2,600 higher each year.
The leaders at the Child Crisis Center of El Paso can attest to the costs.
"The children that are here, we're frequently having to take them to the doctor. We're frequently having to take them to receive mental health support and medications, and all of these come from taxpayer dollars because we have to fund it through subsidized grants, federal grants and programs to pay for these costs," said Al Velarde, CCCEP's executive director.
This does not even include the costs to house and feed these children.
The CDC is pushing for prevention, not only to protect the children, but reduce the impact on the Medicaid system.
