Chicos Tacos to remain despite previous Wal-Mart threat
EL PASO, TX (KTSM) — No new Walmart Stores for one Central El Paso neighborhood.
Store representatives wanted to build a neighborhood market store near Montana and Chelsea where a Chico's Tacos and a veterinary clinic now stand.
The city council was set to make a decision Tuesday after months of debate from residents, but was asked by store reps this morning to have the item on the agenda removed.
The area's city rep, Larry Romero told us what he said really happened.
"They called me last night and asked me what my position was going to be, and I told them I was going to vote against the rezoning," Romero said. "They felt that because of that, and I felt that I had the support of the council, I think they saw the handwriting on the wall and decided they were just going to go ahead and withdraw the whole application or the appeals process."
But Walmart spokesperson Daniel Morales said it this way:
"While a majority of neighbors support a store here we are currently evaluating all our options," he said. "In the meantime, we will look for similar opportunities in other parts of El Paso."
The store has to wait a year before it can reapply for rezoning.
