Chicago — Tens of thousands of teachers and support staff in Chicago were set to go on strike at 7:30 CST Monday morning.
The union president says it was not able to agree on a contract with school officials over pay and other matters.
Meanwhile, the mayor of Chicago says the proposal offered was fair.
"They have made as you know in detail as David has gone and as we have sent to you a very detailed proposal, very respectful of our teachers, is right by our children and is fair to our taxpayers," said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel. "I am disappointed that we have come to this point even though all the other parties acknowledge how close we are because this is a strike of choice. And because of how close we are, it is a strike that is unnecessary."
Chicago is the nation's third largest school system.
