El Paso - The owner of an El Paso furniture store has avoided jail time in a scheme to skirt IRS laws.

A judge fined Charlotte's Furniture $250,000 as part of a plea deal.

Prosecutors say the store issued enough receipts to a single customer to avoid reporting the cash transactions to the IRS.

The store is owned by Melissa O'Rourke, the mother of City Representative Beto O'Rourke.

search the sofa cushions for 250.000 in change.

Hmm, records were manipulated by the store and no taxes paid, as they should have...a "bookkeeping problem." She won't even accept responsibility for this. O'Rourke would only say that "Business would continue as normal (Does this mean you'll be back in court in a couple of years?)...I don't think this will hurt us at all." What a smug, shameless person.

Our city representatives and their families never seem to see the inside of jail.
Isn't that funny???
Forgery, driving with out a lisence, and now cheating the IRS. WWWWWOOOOOWWWWW

Why are you shocked by this. THIS IS NOTHING!! compared to what corporations and banks do to the american citizenry every day

Gee whiz, that's not even as much as one of their sofas, probably. Don't tell me nepotism wasn't involved at all...or just simply friends in gov't.

We need to get the corruption out of our government!
How can we expect citizens to obey laws and follow rules if those in leadership positions don't!

yes, it would be nice if all our city leaders and so forth would be HONEST but I believe that in this town there is definitely way too much nepotism. We came in El Paso 30 years ago, and it seem to us that the people in power were no so crooked than now. It sucks that you cannot trust no one in power to do the right thing without thinking in whats in it for them first.
