Charges against pair of former Socorro Police Officers dismissed
Socorro, TX (KTSM) — El Paso District Judge Gonzalo Garcia has dismissed all of the charges against two former Socorro Police Officers accused of Official Oppression, tampering and perjury.
Former Socorro Police Chief Refugio Orta and Officer Israel Delgado were arrested in October of 2012 on charges for tampering with governmental records and official oppression in connection with an incident in May of 2012 involving the alleged unlawful arrest of a motorcyclist.
Socorro Mayor Jesus Ruiz said that "These officers were terminated during the summer in a joint decision by our City Manager and our former Interim Police Chief. There were no plans to reinstate the former officers if their legal cases were resolved."
Mayor Ruiz said that the former Officers have appealed their termination with the Civil Service Commission, and ultimately, the Civil Service Commission will decide whether or not the pair will be reinstated.
The City of Socorro will only reinstate Orta and Delgado if the Civil Service Commission approves their appeal.
