Community members in Chaparral gathered on Thursday night to discuss a new roundabout already under construction.

Thursday’s meeting was second meeting The New Mexico Department of Transportation has held in an attempt to gain the community’s support.

"Everybody seemed very satisfied with our level of effort. We said we would do something at the last meeting, and that's what we did at this meeting. We informed them of what we were doing, what we plan on doing and everybody acted really positively today,” said Filiberto Castorena with The New Mexico Department of Transportation.

The department says the project is expected to cost around $2 million dollars.
The department also says the intersection at NM-213 and  NM-404 isn't safe.
The new roundabout is expected to help reduce traffic accidents at the intersection.
At their previous meeting, community members voiced their concerns against the roundabout, but some residents are changing their tune.

"It's the change. People don't like it, and they didn't want it. They didn't know about it and they kind of feel like it’s been shoved down their throat,” said resident Lisa Walker.

Chaparral's new roundabout is expected to be completed this August.
