U.S. health officials say there are nearly 12 million cancer survivors in the United States. That number is almost four times as many survivors as there were 40 years ago.

Officials said the numbers reflect big strides in cancer detection and treatment.

Despite the positive numbers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also said many cancer survivors face a lifetime of side effects caused by their treatments.

The CDC said of the total number of survivors, 54 percent are women.

According to the American Cancer Society, there were 1.5 million new cancer cases in the United States in 2010, and 569,490 deaths.
